Surveys

The purpose of a survey is to collect information from an identified target population. A survey may seek to collect information from a subset of this population, or the entire population (a census). OESR can provide a complete, vertically integrated surveys solution, from conception through to final reporting. We are also willing to provide any combination of survey-related services to clients, either providing guidance or conducting the activity ourselves.

OESR Surveys:

OESR provides a summary of Survey Participant Information for people who have been asked to participate in a statistical survey.

Conception

A survey is a means to an end. That end is to supply specific information about a target population. OESR talks to clients about their information needs, deadlines and budgetary constraints. We will propose one or more options, commenting on the strengths and weaknesses of each.

Survey design

Experts in OESR can design simple surveys or complex ones such as multistage cross-sectional sampling schemes and can determine sample sizes required to deliver a specified accuracy of estimates (see Conduct of Sample Surveys by Queensland Government Agencies document at Survey Methods). We will advise on a survey design that will maximise the quantity and quality of information within the constraints of a client's budget. We also advise on the design of longitudinal and panel studies.

Questionnaire construction

Measurement error may be minimised and response rates increased by careful questionnaire design. Criteria for good question design depend on the mode of administration (self-completion versus face to face versus telephone). OESR has considerable experience in designing questions, asking questions and evaluating the quality of responses. We give good objective advice, both on how a question should be worded and, at a broader level, whether a group of questions will elicit the information required.

Fieldwork

OESR has experience and expertise in all forms of survey delivery methods, particularly interview by telephone. We conduct surveys by mail, face to face and electronically using email and web-based systems. OESR has its own, large computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) facility. We are aware of the quality control issues pertinent to each of the different modes of administration. Close attention to best practice ensures that we consistently achieve high response rates across all modes.

Analysis

Our analysis methodologies are consistent with the highest industry standards achieved by such organisations as the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Well trained and experienced OESR staff use sophisticated techniques to control for structural biases and to ensure that sampling errors are accurately estimated. We can analyse trend in repeated cross-sectional surveys.

Reporting

Reporting is tailored to the client’s needs. We collaborate with clients in the production of reports and advise on the interpretation and presentation of results, providing graphs or tables.
